Not the city
The City of Falls Church is independent, with its own tax rate and school division. Idylwood adjoins it and is not in it: Fairfax County taxes, Fairfax County Public Schools. Confirm the jurisdiction of a specific parcel — the difference is material.
The area
Idylwood proper holds established 1950s and 60s single-family streets on modest to generous lots, with a growing share of replacement houses on the original footprints. Near the station, townhouses, condominiums, and newer building fill in. South, Shreve Road runs toward Route 7 and the city; north, the area transitions into Pimmit Hills and Tysons.
House or lot
Like Pimmit Hills next door, some transactions here are land purchases. The original houses are modest, the location is excellent, and builders compete for the lots. Decide which market you are in before making an offer — paying a rebuild price for a keeper, or the reverse, is the common mistake.
The commute
The West Falls Church station serves both the Orange and Silver lines, and from some streets it is a genuine walk. From others it is a short drive. The premium for walking distance is real, so measure the route. I-66 is immediately south, Route 7 north, Tysons about five minutes, Arlington ten to fifteen outside peak.
Both highways are convenient and audible in places — worth checking at a specific address.
