West of Reston and outside the Town of Herndon lies a large stretch of Fairfax County that carries a Herndon mailing address: 1970s through 1990s subdivisions, technology-corridor offices, and the Loudoun line a few minutes west.
Not the town
The Herndon address reaches well beyond the Town of Herndon’s limits. Oak Hill, McNair, Franklin Farm, and Fox Mill are county land — county taxes only, no town tax, Fairfax County Public Schools throughout.
The neighborhoods
Franklin Farm is a large 1980s planned community of single-family homes and townhouses with pools, trails, and a substantial association. Fox Mill Estates holds 1970s and 80s single-family homes on wooded lots. McNair and the Coppermine Road area are newer, near the Parkway and the Route 267 corridor. West toward Route 28 and the Loudoun line, newer building and offices dominate. And at Floris, the older rural core survives around the county’s farm park.

A Fairfax County park at Floris with a working farm, animals, a historic farmhouse, and an equestrian center with an indoor arena. It is a genuine amenity — particularly for families — and it preserves a piece of what this area was before it filled in.
Schools are complicated here
Genuinely. Herndon, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield pyramids all draw from parts of this area, and neighboring subdivisions can be assigned to different high schools. There is no useful general answer: confirm the specific address with FCPS.
Associations vary
Franklin Farm has pools, trails, and common grounds under a substantial association; other neighborhoods have smaller ones or none at all. Across a few streets the difference in monthly cost can be significant. Ask which applies and what it funds.
Getting around
The Fairfax County Parkway and Route 28 run through, with the Dulles Toll Road along the northern edge. The Silver Line’s Herndon and Innovation Center stations are roughly five to ten minutes north, both with parking; Dulles about ten minutes west; Reston Town Center five minutes east.
For a largely single-family area at these prices, that transit and airport access is unusual.
Buying or selling here
Buyers should confirm the pyramid — it is the least predictable thing about this area — then the association, then the house. Sellers should name the pyramid and the station drive time; both are the reasons buyers look here rather than in Loudoun.
